The researchers claimed a second language makes reading, verbal fluency, and increasing intellect. Research involving 262 respondents showed a positive result is true for both younger and older respondents.
Similar studies previously conducted by the Annals of Neurology. The results of the study revealed that bilingual able to slow the attack of dementia for several years.
The big question arising from this study, whether learning a new language or improve cognitive function of people with better cognitive abilities would be easier to become bilingual.
Dr. Thomas Bak of cognitive research center University of Edinburgh said millions of people in the world to learn a second language when entering adulthood. "Our research proves the current study although old, learning the language can slow the aging process," said Bak as reported by the BBC on Monday (2/6).
Harvard medical professor of the university Dr. Alvaro Pascual-Leone adds, epidemiological studies is important as a first step to study the impact of a second language and the aging process.
